Updated March 22, The Northern Territory Parliament has passed a law decriminalising abortion and legalising the medical termination of pregnancy. A crowd of supporters cheered in the public gallery when the bill passed 20 votes to four, after a lengthy debate on Tuesday night. Health Minister Natasha Fyles said in passing the bill the Government had delivered on an election commitment to Territory women.
The debate earlier in the evening stirred impassioned speeches from all sides of Parliament, with arguments ranging from discrimination to claims of a new stolen generation. 5 guys Queanbeyan Australia Minister Michael Gunner said the bill was fundamentally about giving Territory women the same equity afforded to others around Australia.
Both the Government and Opposition argued the bill would bring the Territory in line with other jurisdictions, and into the 21st century, but the independent Member for Nelson said it was rather, taking the NT back to "the dark ages".
Mr Wood said pregnancy termination was contributing to a Akstralia stolen generation, and suggested it was hypocritical to pass domestic violence laws when abortion was allowed.

Why don't we make a fuss about that? The laws provide for safe access zones around clinics and hospitals, but independent Member for Blain Terry Mills agreed with Mr Wood that it would clinicss freedom of speech.
The debate has unearthed personal stories shared by politicians, including from Member for Sanderson Kate Worden who cliics she decided against terminating a pregnancy before it ended in miscarriage. Mr Gunner said supporting the bill meant allowing women in remote areas to access their right to an abortion without leaving family supporters.
Under current laws, abortions can only be performed at two hospitals in Darwin, and Frde in Alice Springs because two medical practitioners need to assess a patient — one must be either an obstetrician or a gynaecologist.
Deputy Opposition Leader Lia Finocchiaro expressed support for the bill, but questioned how the health and safety of women seeking abortion in remote areas will be maintained. Sprigns said Australua should be made independently available to allow women to make an informed decision, regardless of the view of their practitioner. The reform will mean medical practitioners who are conscientious objectors must refer women to another doctor, but Mr Mills argued this undermined the premise of being a conscientious objector in the first place.
